The life of dashing James McAra Mitchel was full of secrets adventures, politics, death, pioneer challenges, insane asylum admissions, bankruptcies and the occasional happy story to tell.
In the late 1800s, Mitchel was the Station Manager at Rockbank estate one of the largest properties in Victoria. At the time this huge property stretched all the way from Werribee to Lancefield. Life took a dramatic turn and in 1900 he was taken to the Kew Insane Asylum with “Anxiety over business”.
Mitchel’s descendant, author and genealogist Janeen O’Connell will reveal the secrets uncovered in the journey to learn more about him, and importantly, his contribution to the Melton district. She’ll show how she discovered this hidden gem in through her family history research.
